Exhibit Symbols of living in-between: Re-stor(y)ing life within life-threatening illness 2012-05-27 07:30:00
Description

Advances in science and healthcare have allowed people with life-threatening illnesses to live longer and healthier lives. But the outcomes of treatment are uncertain and the experience of living in-between a promise of prolonged life, and the possibility of illness reoccurring and progressing, is often misunderstood.

Thirty-two people diagnosed with a life-threatening illness (cancer, chronic kidney disease, and HIV/AIDS) volunteered for an interview. They were asked to identify a symbol that represented their experience with their diagnosed illness. Symbols of living in-between: Re-stor(y)ing life within life-threatening illness is the collective effort from a team of nurse researchers seeking new insights into the experiences of individuals that live with the uncertainty of a serious illness.

This exhibit shares a selection of these important images and stories with the public. Symbols range from personal objects and medical documents to favourite music, clothing, and family photographs. Narratives from the participants and poems produced by the research team accompany the stories of these individuals living with a life-threatening illness. The symbols and narratives highlight how living with a life-threatening illness is much more than a “medical story.”

Symbols of living in-between: Re-stor(y)ing life within life-threatening illness is a travelling exhibit and will be displayed in multiple spaces from galleries to healthcare facilities. This exhibit is part of a larger study entitled Re-stor(y)ing Life Within Life-Threatening Illness. The Re-stor(y)ing project has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). KRESCENT and the Kidney Foundation of Canada has provided additional support.

This free exhibit runs from April 13 to June 4, 2012, at the Maltwood Prints and Drawings Gallery in the McPherson Library (Lower Level) at UVic. Gallery follows regular library hours.

“STYLISTICALLY DAZZLING AND DRAMATICALLY GRIPPING!” --Film Comment
Academic egos clash to witty effect in this tale of two Talmudic scholars at odds with one another. That they are father and son adds a certain frisson to the plangent goings-on. Professor Eliezer Shkolnik (Shlomo Bar Aba) has been toiling for decades, trying to correct the texts of the Talmud in order to produce a definitive version. His son Uriel (Lior Ashkenazi), seems his opposite--a generalist who produces popular books. Uriel seems to crave the spotlight, while Elizier looks down his nose at such things--and the people who pursue them. Until Dad is up for a big award, that is... –Vancouver International Film Festival

Lecture/Seminar Cross-Canada Checkup: A Canadian Perspective on Our Water Future 2012-05-29 09:00:00
Description

WEBINAR SUMMARY

Across the country, Canadians are passionate about the protection of water and willing to engage with challenging issues that have the potential to impact water quality and quantity. Although each province and territory faces a unique set of water-related concerns, there are overarching themes that cut across borders.

Drawing on the new report "Cross-Canada Checkup: A Canadian Perspective on Our Water Future," the guest speakers will offer a perspective on current and emerging water challenges and priorities across Canada, and illustrate the interrelatedness of many water issues common to all Canadians. They will explore the Northwest Territories’ groundbreaking new water stewardship strategy as a model for water policy reform in the rest of Canada, and discuss the emerging need for a new national vision for understanding the value of water in this country.

This webinar will complement the launch of "Cross-Canada Checkup: A Canadian Perspective on Our Water Future," published by the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance at the University of Victoria and the Adaptation to Climate Change Team (ACT) at Simon Fraser University.

Director: David Gelb USA, 2011, 83 min; Japanese with subtitles; rated G
“CAPTIVATING!” –Los Angeles Times
“BEAUTIFULLY PHOTOGRAPHED…a foodie’s dream night at the movies!” –Time
A dream, indeed. Sure to delight foodies and cinephiles alike, David Gelb’s meditative and illuminating documentary profiles Jiro Ono, the 85-year-old proprietor of the beloved Tokyo sushi restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro. Celebrity gourmand Anthony Bourdain has sung the chef’s praises, the Japanese government has recognized him as a national treasure, and his low-key establishment has garnered the highest rating from the notoriously stingy Michelin guide. Everything about the movie seems touched by Jiro’s finely honed methods of simplicity and minimalism… A doc so delicious you could eat it. –Time Out New York

Music Serenades Lost and Found 2012-05-30 20:00:00
Description

In their final performance of the 2011-12 season, the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria is offering an evening of little-known Austrian and German serenades. The program includes Robert Volkmann’s Serenade no. 2 in F major, Op. 63, Julius Klengel’s Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 24, and Robert Fuchs Serenade No. 3 in E minor, Op. 21.

All three of these individuals are not only highly regarded composers but they were also respected musicians and teachers. Over the years, however, their music was largely forgotten and today has almost totally disappeared from the concert stage. Conductor Yariv Aloni and the orchestra will breathe new life into these serenades at their season-ending concert and this will be a great opportunity to hear some wonderful classical pieces that you may never have heard before.

Exhibit On Communities and Nations 2012-05-30 10:00:00
Description

Ideas of community and nation have a complicated set of relationships. For some, communities are nations.
For historian Benedict Anderson, nations are synthetic constructions that we come to imagine as communities through various systems of exchange that include public meeting places and the reproduction of images and narratives.

On Communities and Nations examines Anderson’s concept of imagined communities in relationship to the emergence of First Nations printmaking practices in the late twentieth century.

Exhibit Symbols of living in-between: Re-stor(y)ing life within life-threatening illness 2012-05-31 07:30:00

Film Jiro Dreams of Sushi 2012-05-31 19:15:00
Description

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI

Exhibit On Communities and Nations 2012-06-01 10:00:00
