| Exhibit | On Communities and Nations | 2012-04-25 | 10:00:00 |
| Description
|
Ideas of community and nation have a complicated set of relationships. For some, communities are nations.
For historian Benedict Anderson, nations are synthetic constructions that we come to imagine as communities through various systems of exchange that include public meeting places and the reproduction of images and narratives.
On Communities and Nations examines Anderson’s concept of imagined communities in relationship to the emergence of First Nations printmaking practices in the late twentieth century.

| Exhibit | Symbols of living in-between: Re-stor(y)ing life within life-threatening illness | 2012-04-25 | 07:30:00 |
| Description
|
Advances in science and healthcare have allowed people with life-threatening illnesses to live longer and healthier lives. But the outcomes of treatment are uncertain and the experience of living in-between a promise of prolonged life, and the possibility of illness reoccurring and progressing, is often misunderstood.
Thirty-two people diagnosed with a life-threatening illness (cancer, chronic kidney disease, and HIV/AIDS) volunteered for an interview. They were asked to identify a symbol that represented their experience with their diagnosed illness. Symbols of living in-between: Re-stor(y)ing life within life-threatening illness is the collective effort from a team of nurse researchers seeking new insights into the experiences of individuals that live with the uncertainty of a serious illness.
This exhibit shares a selection of these important images and stories with the public. Symbols range from personal objects and medical documents to favourite music, clothing, and family photographs. Narratives from the participants and poems produced by the research team accompany the stories of these individuals living with a life-threatening illness. The symbols and narratives highlight how living with a life-threatening illness is much more than a “medical story.”
Symbols of living in-between: Re-stor(y)ing life within life-threatening illness is a travelling exhibit and will be displayed in multiple spaces from galleries to healthcare facilities. This exhibit is part of a larger study entitled Re-stor(y)ing Life Within Life-Threatening Illness. The Re-stor(y)ing project has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). KRESCENT and the Kidney Foundation of Canada has provided additional support.
This free exhibit runs from April 13 to June 4, 2012, at the Maltwood Prints and Drawings Gallery in the McPherson Library (Lower Level) at UVic. Gallery follows regular library hours.

| Lecture/Seminar | Marbled Murrelets and Climate Change | 2012-04-25 | 19:30:00 |
| Description
|
Marbled Murrelets owe much of their success to their speed in the air; the mist, fog, and drizzle that make the fiords so dreary may create a medium that aids their speedy flight. We appear to be entering another period of global warming during which many habitats will become unrecognizable. Join Gary Kaiser as he discusses the possible effects of climate change on Marbled Murrelet populations and how we can make effective conservation plans for the species.

| Film | The Grey | 2012-04-25 | 19:00:00 |
| Description
|
Director: Joe Carnahan USA, 2012, 117 min; 14A
Cast: Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney
A taut, lean, intense drama about men-against-the-elements that has strains of Jack London and Albert Camus. An airplane carrying oil rig workers crashes in remote Alaska, and seven men survive. They’ve been dropped into the hunting grounds of an angry pack of wolves. The film is set amid the lashing cold, the empty wind, the ghastly taunts of wolfish howls and, in one unforgettable sequence, of beastly eyes piercing the night. A genuinely entertaining thriller that puts a chill through you in more ways than one. –Portland Oregonian

| Lecture/Seminar | CSRS Special Lecture - Trickster's Children: Jewish Anthropologists and Their Non-Jewish Subjects | 2012-04-25 | 10:30:00 |
| Description
|
CSRS Special Lecture
Trickster's Children: Jewish Anthropologists and Their Non-Jewish Subjects
Jonathan Boyarin, Department of Religious Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
It is at best an open secret that an astonishing number of early North American professional ethnographers–and especially those who studied First Nations–were of European Jewish extraction. This is all the more remarkable given the general failure of cultural anthropology, well into the 20th century, to study living Jewish culture and communities. In this presentation, I propose a scholarly genealogy linking contemporary anthropologists back through the generations to “Papa” Franz Boas, his students, and the disciples of Boas’s students who were our teachers, and begin to open the question of how Native Americans might have served as the figure of a displaced and spectral Jewishness.
Jonathan Boyarin is the Leonard and Tobee Kaplan Distinguished Professor of Modern Jewish Thought in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Trained in cultural anthropology and Yiddish studies, he has published widely in the areas of Jewish ethnography, critical theory and cultural history. His most recent book is Mornings at the Stanton Street Shul: A Lower East Side Summer (Fordham University Press, 2011). When not in Chapel Hill, he can usually be found on the Lower East Side with his spouse, cultural geographer Elissa Sampson.
