Centre for Studies in Religion and Society Public Lecture Series
Postponed from January 18 - Divine Origins: Did Shamanistic Practices Inspire the Earliest Art?
Genevieve von Petzinger, CSRS Ian H. Stewart Graduate Student Fellow
Department of Anthropology, UVic
Shamanism is a very old spiritual tradition that continues to be practiced in various parts of the modern world. It has been proposed that shamanism could have been the religion of the people of Ice Age Europe, and that rock art from this time period (10,000 – 35,000 years ago) was created for this purpose. This talk will address the question of whether shamanism could have been the motivating factor for the creation of the oldest known art in the world.
Genevieve von Petzinger is a PhD student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria. Her main area of interest is European Ice Age rock art, in particular its geometric imagery, and how we can use these images to identify cognitive and symbolic evolution in modern humans, as well as look at patterns of migration and cultural borrowing.

From the studios of 19 University of Victoria art education instructors in the Faculty of Education comes a rich and diverse exhibition of images and objects that range through traditional and newer media. Working independently in their studios, these artist/educators collaborate and exchange ideas on a daily basis while working with students, engaging them in creative problem solving, and assisting in the preparation of work for exhibitions.
What they hold in common is a commitment to both the classroom and the studio as sites of research and dissemination. Teaching informs studio practice and studio informs teaching practice in the daily ebb and flow of professional life. This exhibition invites visitors to experience that dynamic interaction.

Ideas of community and nation have a complicated set of relationships. For some, communities are nations.
For historian Benedict Anderson, nations are synthetic constructions that we come to imagine as communities through various systems of exchange that include public meeting places and the reproduction of images and narratives.
On Communities and Nations examines Anderson’s concept of imagined communities in relationship to the emergence of First Nations printmaking practices in the late twentieth century.

The University of Victoria's Retirees Association and the Centre on Aging—with support from the university—presents Masterminds 2012, a free lecture series running each Wednesday evening in April.
During the 1950s and 1960s, a small number of architects changed Victoria's built environment with forward-looking plans and bold new forms. Major projects of the period were the University of Victoria’s Gordon Head campus and Centennial Square in the core of the city. This presentation draws on research on the development of a regional modernist aesthetic in the post-war Victoria urban landscape.
Martin Segger is the former director and curator of the Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery, and was a senior research associate in the Centre for Global Studies and adjunct professor in the Department of History in Art. He has also served as president of the International Council of Museums, and is a Fellow of the Canadian Museums Association and of the Royal Society of Arts. Professor Segger was awarded the President’s Distinguished Service Award in 2010 for his contributions to UVic over a period of 37 years, especially for cultural resource management and heritage initiatives.
Please register by calling 250-721-6369 and plan to arrive early, as seating is limited. There is a $2.25 charge in all campus parking lots during evenings.
